Yangon aquarium receives green light

Myanmar real estate news Yangon's first international-standard aquarium received Myanmar Investment Commission (MIC) approval earlier this week.

Myanmar Aquariums Company started building the Yangon Ecological Aquarium in Kandawgyi Gardens in May 2014 after winning a tender the previous November, targeting a late-2015 opening date.

But the US$15 million project hit a snag a month later when Yangon City Development Commission failed to grant the company permission to cut down trees at the 5-acre site.

The 20,000-square-metre aquarium will replace the Freshwater Fish Garden, which opened in 2005 on the same site.

It featured two waterfalls, a stream, 23 in-ground fish tanks and 24 glass fish tanks.

MIC secretary U Aung Naing Oo told media earlier this week that when the aquarium is finished, Myanmar “will soon have a place to view beautiful fish, like in other countries”.

The project’s designer, Singaporean consultant Surbana Jurong, had not responded to a request for comment yesterday.

Its website describes how the design “blends in seamlessly with the natural surroundings, capitalises on the spectacular view offered by the lake and boasts green features such as a green roof”.

Since the MIC was reorganised by the government in early July, it has approved 13 foreign investments worth $124.156 million, and nine domestic investments worth $34.9 million and K79.378 billion, U Aung Naing Oo said.

On July 31, in its most recent round of approvals, the commission approved three investments: the aquarium, a garments factory proposed by Sewell Garment Industrial Company, and a data centre and wireless internet services proposed by Marga Global Telecom.
