Four Yangon flyovers to be completed this year

Myanmar real estate news Four flyovers and six pedestrian bridges under construction in Yangon will be finished by the end of this fiscal year, according to local authorities.

Once complete, the bridges should improve traffic flow along the city’s main thoroughfares – construction work has meant gridlock, as traffic is diverted down narrow side-streets.

U Linn Khine from Yangon City Development Committee’s Engineering Department on November 12 said progress has been temporarily slowed as workers were permitted to travel to their homes to vote in the November 8 election.

“We plan to finish up construction by the end of March 2016,” he said.

He didn’t say whether the projects were likely to run beyond budget. Flyovers are being built using the government’s regional budget, while YCDC will pay for supporting infrastructure including water and electricity lines.

Yangon Region Government called a tender for private companies to build the flyovers in April, in the hope of solving Yangon’s chronic congestion problem.

The four flyovers are located at 8 mile junction on Pyay Road, Kokkine junction on Kabar Aye Pagoda Road, the top of Tarmwe roundabout on U Chit Maung Road, and a fourth linking North Okkalapa to North Dagon township on Bo Ba Htoo Road.

Six pedestrian bridges have been commissioned by YCDC’s Engineering Department – one on Insein Road, two on Pyay Road, one on Maw Tin Road, another on Bahan 3 Street and an extension of the pedestrian overpass on Sule Pagoda Road.

All will be finished within this fiscal year, said U Linn Khine.

Police Captain Win Lwin from No 2 traffic police said on November 14 that he welcomes the new pedestrian bridges, particularly on Sule Pagoda Road.

“Now people will not walk across Anawrahta Road,” he said.

Last fiscal year, the YCDC’s Engineering Department completed three pedestrian bridges in Yangon – on Pansodan Street, Kabar Aye Pagoda Road and Ka Yay Pin junction in Mingalardon township.
